How to Make Cake Pops

Running out of ideas when it comes to a last-minute, no-fuss, quick party dessert trick? How about trying your hand at learning how to make cake pops? If you have leftover cake lying around the house, you can repurpose it into cake pops. These sweet confections also go by the name of cake balls, cakesicles, cupcake pops, and cake bites. They are bite-sized balls made from a mix of crumbled cake and frosting, covered in candy sprinkles, and topped with a lollipop stick. The hardened, crisp chocolate shell outside makes way to a moist cake inside that melts in your mouth.

After you make cake pops, there’s plenty of room for you to showcase your creativity when it comes to decorating them. You can experiment with different colors when it comes to the melted chocolate. You can also turn the cake balls into different shapes. Before putting them into the sticks, chill the balls to firm them up and then mold them into your desired shape.

These are the perfect party favors or giveaways, as they can be decorated to adapt to the occasion. You can use any flavor of frosting, as well as any type of cake; you can make the cake from scratch, bake from a box, or use a portion of leftover cake! The process to make cake pops is pretty simple: you break the cake into crumbles, mix a little bit of the frosting and mold the putty into small balls, stick them onto lollipop sticks and dip them into melted chocolate that hardens into a delightfully crisp outer shell.

What You Will Need

  • Leftover chocolate cake, crumbled into pieces
  • chocolate frosting
  • 2 boxes of white chocolate
  • lollipop sticks
  • sprinkles

What You Have to Do

  1. Crumble your chocolate cake.
  2. Add the chocolate frosting onto the crumbled cake and mix using your hands until the resulting dough can be shaped into a ball.
  3. Use a coffee or ice cream scoop to scoop out cake balls from the mixture.
  4. Roll two scoops of the cake mixture into one small, firm ball and then place on a plate.
  5. Repeat this process until all of the cake mixture has been transformed into small chocolate balls.
  6. Melt a small amount of white chocolate in the microwave.
  7. Dip the ends of the lollipop into the melted white chocolate.
  8. Insert the sticks into the cake balls.
  9. Place the cake balls into the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  10. Melt all of the remaining white chocolate and place it in a deep and narrow container.
  11. Remove the chilled cake balls from the refrigerator.
  12. Dip the cake balls in the melted white chocolate, making sure every surface is fully covered.
  13. Allow the excess chocolate to drip off from the stick by twirling and turning them over.
  14. Top the melted chocolate with sprinkles. Work quickly as the melted chocolate will harden right away.
  15. Place them into a cake pop stand and put in the refrigerator to firm them up.

5 Tips to Make Cake Pops

  • Don’t add too much frosting to the crumbled cake. Doing so will only make it too moist, resulting to an unpleasant texture. Going overboard with the frosting will only cause the cake balls to fall off the sticks. It is highly recommended that you start with a small amount of frosting, then continuously add frost until you have reached the desired consistency.
  • Avoid making too big cake balls, as the extra weight will only prevent them from staying on the sticks. Use a coffee scoop or a mini-ice cream scoop in order to come up with uniformly-sized cake balls.
  • Chill the cake pops before dipping them onto the melted chocolate. Otherwise, they will only fall off the lollipop sticks if they’re not firm.
  • When dipping the cake ball in the melted chocolate, do not twirl the cake ball into the concoction because it might fall off the stick. Instead, make sure that you are using a deep and narrow container for your melted chocolate. It should be deep enough that you can completely submerge the cake ball in it.
  • Remove the excess coating by gently tapping and turning over the cake pop, so that any excess chocolate can drip off.
  • Use only light candy sprinkles to make cake pops.
